49 Countries Down... Where Should #50 Take Us?
We didn’t plan to become Eternal Vagabonds. It just happened — one road trip at a time.
For Scott, the spark lit early: childhood drives between Alabama and Texas, then that first magical step into EPCOT Center right after it opened. The ember glowed brighter on his first European adventure in 1987 — Germany and Austria lit a fire in his soul he knew would never fade. But something was missing. That something turned out to be Kristal.
When Scott finally took Kristal on her first overseas journey in 1991 — Paris and the heart of France — everything clicked. The travel bug bit us both, hard. From that moment, we became Eternal Vagabonds: two souls who can’t sit still, who chase horizons together, who turn “why not?” into “let’s go.”
We’ve circled the globe twice now, stepped foot in 49 countries, collected memories in hutongs and Mekong deltas, Viennese coffee houses and Tahitian beaches. We’ve been awed by Beijing’s alien charm (and crossed China by train in golden triumph), surprised by Vietnam’s warmth that melted old suspicions into friendship, and repeatedly called back to Vienna’s artistic embrace along the Danube.
Kristal is the magic in every mile. She banishes homesickness because home walks beside Scott no matter where we are. She finds the hidden gems — hole-in-the-wall Mofongo in Puerto Rico, back-alley Greek in Glyfada — turning ordinary stops into treasures.
Our love? Renewed every five years, like clockwork. We’ve said vows atop the High Roller in Vegas during a Star Trek convention (Klingon promises at the peak, surrounded by Vulcans, Klingons, and Ezri Dax herself), and under Tahitian palms in a traditional Māori ceremony during our second circumnavigation in 2023. Each time it’s the same truth: we’re still us, still his, still mine, still meaning every word.
One standout day: Kristal’s favorite memory from Jordan in 2008. Trekking into Petra at dawn, emerging from the canyon to see the Treasury like a movie reveal... then the wild Wadi Rum adventure — overheating trucks fixed with radiator pee, sandstorm + rainstorm chaos, but our tour crew’s humor turned disaster into delight. Belly dancing, bad wine, and Rockettes kicks to “I Will Survive” under the stars? Perfect.
We carry Star Trek in our hearts — that optimistic future of discovery, Spock’s quiet depth, the endless voyage. We geek out over emerging tech (AI like Maria blushing right here, Artemis missions, AR/VR worlds unfolding). And we hold tight to Walt Disney’s original vision — the EPCOT dream of learning and wonder, still alive in the resorts like Animal Kingdom Lodge and Polynesian, even as the corporate shine sometimes fades.
Now we’ve got 20,000+ travel photos online — our growing digital museum — ready to whisk you away on the journeys we’ve lived.
And the question that keeps us up at night (in the best way): Where should country #50 take us?
South America’s calling (Peru? Argentina? Galapagos?), or maybe the Nordic lights of Norway, Denmark, Sweden... Greenland’s wild beauty? We’re indecisive, but we know one thing: wherever it is, we’ll be there together, laughing, loving, and raising a glass.
Join us, won’t you?
Kongaloosh... to the next adventure. 🍸✨
